Closing Is the Most Important Part of Selling

Closing Is the Most Important Part of Selling

By Mohammed Amin , Founder and Managing Director, New Horizons Islamabad

There is a quiet moment in every sales conversation — a moment that carries more weight than all the presentations, all the explanations, and all the effort that came before it.

  1. It is the moment of truth.
  2. It is the moment of decision.
  3. It is the moment of closing.

We often prepare ourselves to speak well, to present beautifully, and to convince intelligently. But sales is not measured by how well we speak — it is measured by what happens at the end.

As Zig Ziglar once said, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”

But helping people does not end with explaining — it ends with guiding them to act.

Where Emotions Meet Decisions

Selling, especially in the early days of my career, was never just a profession — it was deeply human.

When I was selling the World Book Encyclopedia, I was not standing in front of “customers.” I was sitting in living rooms, sharing tea, speaking to parents about their dreams for their children.

  • I could see hope in their eyes.
  • I could hear concern in their voices.

They wanted the best — but like many families, they hesitated when it came to making a commitment.

I remember one evening very clearly.

A father sat quietly as I presented the encyclopedia. His children were sitting nearby, curious and excited, flipping through the pages. The mother asked thoughtful questions. The environment was warm, receptive — everything a salesperson could hope for.

In my heart, I knew this product could truly benefit their children. But when the time came to ask for the decision, I held back. I smiled, thanked them for their time, and left.

As I walked away, I felt something heavy inside me — not because I lost a sale, but because I had failed to complete what I had started. I had shown them a better possibility, but I had not helped them step into it.

That night, I understood something deeply:

  1. If you truly believe in what you are offering, then closing is not pressure — it is care.
  2. The Courage to Ask

Not long after, I visited another family. The same story — hopes, concerns, dreams for their children. But this time, I carried a different mindset. After sharing everything, I paused, looked at the parents, and said with sincerity:

“This is an investment in your children’s future. Let us take this step together.”

There was a moment of silence. Then came a simple word: “Yes.”

That “yes” was not just a sale — it was a turning point in my life. It replaced hesitation with confidence. It taught me that courage in closing is an act of belief — belief in your product, and belief in the value you bring to people’s lives.

Closing Is an Emotional Responsibility

Brian Tracy said, “The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire, not things we fear.”

Many salespeople fear rejection. They fear hearing “no.” So they avoid asking.

But what we often forget is this:

When we don’t close, we are not avoiding rejection — we are abandoning opportunity.

Dale Carnegie reminded us, “People are not logical; they are emotional.”

And emotions need guidance. People often want to move forward — they just need someone to gently lead them.

That is the role of a salesperson.

From Homes to Institutions:

As my journey progressed from selling encyclopedias to families to working with schools and institutions, the environments changed — but human nature did not.

Whether it is a parent deciding for their child or a principal deciding for a school, the same hesitation exists.

And in every case, the difference between success and failure comes down to one thing:

Did we ask? Did we guide? Did we close?

Jim Rohn said, “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan.”

Similarly, if you don’t guide your customer to a decision, they will fall into indecision — or someone else’s offer.

The Deeper Truth About Closing

Closing is not a technique.

It is not a script.

It is not a trick.

Closing is a reflection of your belief.

  1. If you believe in your product, you will ask.
  2. If you believe in your customer, you will guide.
  3. If you believe in yourself, you will close._

Final Thought:

After decades in the field of education — from sitting in living rooms with families to presenting solutions to institutions — one truth has stayed constant: Every meaningful sale happens when belief meets courage. And I have learned this from experience:

A salesperson, a creative salesperson, always stands in front of his or her prospect with the conviction — and the strategy — that the person in front of them will say “yes.”

Because in the heart of every great salesperson lies a simple, powerful expectation: They still expect the customer to buy.
